VENGEANCE ROAD REVEAL: RECAP

Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 2 of 5 }Introducing Jesse and Will ColtonAlways looking to earn an extra dollar, these cowboys work odd jobs across the Territory. Cheerful and good-humored, Will is the perfect contrast to his older brother’s stern demeanor. But with their savings dwindling and loved ones to take care of, Jesse has reason to run a tight ship. Once the boys cross paths with Kate and learn that her destination may yield gold, they become–much to Kate’s displeasure–her permanent shadow. Fun Fact: Before drafting Vengeance Road, I read an entire book dedicated to cowboy culture. Even though the Coltons do little wrangling and roping on the actual page, this research allowed me to better understand their typical day-to-day life and weave subtle details into Kate’s story. Photo credits from left to right, top to bottom: still from Love’s Enduring Promise (2004) / still from Lonesome Dove (1989) / still from American Outlaws (2001) / Howard Folsom / AZ Chaps / Porsteinn Ingibergsson / Richard Prince / still from The Quick and the Dead (1995)You can also check out my pinterest board for more of my visual inspiration -»Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 4 of 5 }Introducing LiluyeSeparated from her tribe, this young Apache girl is anxious to reunite with her family. WoW: THE WINNER’S KISS

WE’VE GOT ANOTHER ONE

This is a pretty lonely WoW, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. Lonely because we won’t see it until MARCH 1ST OF 2016.

It kills me to think about. A thrilling series conclusion coming on the heels of a devastating cliffhanger, THE WINNER’S KISS is one of my most anticipated books for next year. And I mean, look at this cover:

20443235

I’M DYING

HERE’S OUR SUMMARY SO FAR (GOODREADS)

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it, with the East as his ally and the empire as his enemy. He’s finally managed to dismiss the memory of Kestrel, even if he can’t quite forget her. Kestrel turned into someone he could no longer recognize: someone who cared more for the empire than for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she cared for him. At least, that’s what he thinks.

But far north lies a work camp where Kestrel is a prisoner. Can she manage to escape before she loses herself? As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover unexpected roles in battle, terrible secrets, and a fragile hope. The world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and Kestrel and Arin are caught between. In a game like this, can anybody really win?

WHY I’M EXCITED

Look, The Winner’s Curse is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read. Ever. So to be left without a conclusion, alone and helpless, while I wait to know the fates of Arin and Kestrel? MY GOD I CANNOT.

So, yeah. I really want this book, and if you aren’t waiting for it, too, you need to go read the first two.

RIGHT NOW.

Love you all.

What’s YOUR WoW?

TEASER TUESDAY: THE CAGE

WHAT ARE YOU READING THIS WEEK?

This is a short blurb from A Daily Rhythm. Here are the rules:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

So, without further ado:

THE CAGE ~ MEGAN SHEPHERD

‘It wasn’t a puzzle. It was a trap.’

Woah. Intense, right? That’s the one I’m reading right now, and I just started it Saturday. I haven’t had a lot of time to read, but seriously, I’m only on page 67 (at the time of typing this) and this is already topping my favorites list. Nothing like a quick random page skim to get you excited for more!

What’s YOUR Teaser Tuesday?! Post a link to your blog or post in the comments!

WHY HE’S COOL

There’s nothing better than a rumbling old man full of tall tales that may not be so tall. It adds an element of depth and a wondering to your mind while your reading- Could it be at all true? We won’t know until we read it. Stay tuned for more Vengeance Road goodies, and some other fun posts this week.

VENGEANCE ROAD REVEAL: LILUYE

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER REVEAL

I’m so sorry that this one comes just about in time for tomorrow. It’s been a crazy day, and my weekend is going to be crazy, too (so my Monday Author may come late, too). But I’m here for a moment, and today we get to know Liluye, an Apache Indian girl who plays a part in Vengeance Road. Here’s what Erin’s vision is, taking from her tumblr (source below):

Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 4 of 5 }Introducing LiluyeSeparated from her tribe, this young Apache girl is anxious to reunite with her family. Knowing all too well how dangerous it is to be traveling alone, Liluye agrees to help Kate navigate the Superstition Mountains. But Liluye has her own end goals and her agreement with Kate could unravel at any moment.Fun Fact: In Vengeance Road, characters constantly use each other as a means to an end. This is true regarding Liluye and Kate, but their dynamic changes over the course of the novel in a way that was so much fun (and extremely rewarding) to write. Yes, I’m being vague, but the pay-off is in the pages, and I don’t want to spoil that for you.Photo credits from left to right, top to bottom: via Boston Public Library / Chad Wagner / Sherri Cavalier / Sasha Darling / viaYou can also check out my pinterest board for my visual inspiration -»

ANOTHER PUZZLE PIECE IN PLACE

I didn’t know that this was a character at all, and I love that it adds yet another angle, another dynamic, another person to add to her unintentional entourage. I love that she’s got this potential for so much of the Native American culture to shine through, like the Sacagawea to Kate’s Lewis or Clark, a guide through the wild. I’m really excited to see what part she plays (and I hope there’s an awesome brave searching for her!), so this is a really inspiring reveal for me. I can’t wait until tomorrow to see our final character photoset!

VENGEANCE ROAD REVEAL: THE ROSE RIDERS

THE BAD GUYS ARE HERE

Here they are, everyone! We’ve been waiting to meet the villains of this novel (Vengeance Road, obviously) for a while now, and your wishes have been granted! The Rose Riders are the meanest outlaws around and they’re merciless- see how Erin portrays them, reposted from her tumblr account (link below). And then see why I love them as the villains of the story.

Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 3 of 5 }

Introducing the Rose Riders

Led by the ruthless Waylan Rose, this infamous gang preys on Arizona’s stagecoach lines. According to Jesse, Rose is the “meanest hog in the Territory” and doesn’t spare anyone–not even women or children–when gold is at stake.

Fun Fact: Outlaw bands of the late 1800s and early 1900s tended to take the name of their boss (eg: the Dalton Gang) or something more descriptive (eg: the Wild Bunch). For the villains of Vengeance Road, I wanted to do both. I also wanted to play with imagery, giving these very vicious men a somewhat beautiful icon. Then again, rose thorns can definitely draw blood…

HOLD ONTO YOUR GUNS

Everyone’s going to fall in love with these bad guys. They’re not secretly soft, they don’t have a tendency to good, and they’re not merciful just because you have a sob story. They’re ultra-bad-guys, and Kate shows her gumption when she deals with them- no mercy, no regrets, only cold hard vengeance.

I love her.

A lot of times, there’s some redeeming quality about a villain or some sad backstory to make them more relatable, more sympathetic, but so far (as far as I’ve read) these guys are just bad, and that makes this a clear-cut bad guy- no tortured souls to be redeemed.

I’ll look really silly if they all turn into kind and merciful men.

I hope you enjoyed this newest Vengeance Road Reveal, and keep a lookout for Kate’s adventure hitting shelves September 1st, 2015 from HMH!

WoW: ILLUMINAE

GET READY FOR SOME SCI-FI

This is a novel that I seriously CANNOT wait for. The story of warring intergalactic mega-corporations and the two people who have to bring everything to light, this book has been on my TBR list for like, 800 years. Well, as soon as I saw it on goodreads, anyway. Let me show you the beautiful cover of this one, coming to us October 20, 2015 from Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff:

 IS THIS COOL OR WHAT?

HERE’S YOUR SUMMARY (GOODREADS)

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

CAN YOU SEE WHY I’M EXCITED?

Amie Kaufman is one half of a duo (with Megan Spooner) that write my absolute FAVORITE YA science fiction- These Broken Stars and This Shattered World- and book three, coming in December, will be on my WoW list, you can be sure. Her books are so well-written and the worlds so immaculately detailed that you can’t help but imagine living on them yourself. And the twists! The twists, oh my, they’re so amazing and heartstopping and everything else you want in a twist.

So you can see, as a science fiction lover, how I would be super pumped about this newest series, coming to us from two sides, coming from an established sci-fi presence in the YA world. However, I am a little worried, because on Jay Kristoff’s goodreads profile it states that he does not believe in happy endings. Well, I do. There are very few unhappy endings that I approve of- killing your MC off is a lazy way to end a book, people!

Anyway, I’m really excited to see this new series (NetGalley is killing me, making me wait) and tell you guys all about it, and I hope you;ll take a look now that it’s been brought to your attention!

VENGEANCE ROAD REVEAL: JESSE & WILL COLTON

EVERY COWGIRL’S DREAM

And here they are: the boys we’ve been waiting for! Jesse and Will arrive early in the story and there’s a lot of unknowns when it comes to them. Who are they? What’s their game? Are they friend or foe? And the biggest question of all: Who’s going to steal your heart, nevermind Kate’s. Here’s Erin’s take on the brothers. (And remember, everything from the first picture down to the bold Source is from Erin’s tumblr, not my words).

Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 2 of 5 }Introducing Jesse and Will ColtonAlways looking to earn an extra dollar, these cowboys work odd jobs across the Territory. Photo credits from left to right, top to bottom: still from Love’s Enduring Promise (2004) / still from Lonesome Dove (1989) / still from American Outlaws (2001) / Howard Folsom / AZ Chaps / Porsteinn Ingibergsson / Richard Prince / still from The Quick and the Dead (1995)You can also check out my pinterest board for more of my visual inspiration -»

IT REMINDS ME OF A SONG

“Cain’t you feel ma heart palpitatin’ and thumpin’, a-waitin’ fer somethin’, something good from you?” That song’s from Oklahoma, a cowboy musical near and dear to me. That’s what I thought of when this set of images appeared on my tumblr, as well as when I first read about Jesse and Will (Jesse especially- be still, my heart!) because every girl loves a cowboy at some point in their lives. And my darling Vengeance Road has TWO. If Kate’s tenacity and independence didn’t catch your fancy, surely a team of brothers who couldn’t be more different, but both in search of a way to keep their family alive, will do the trick. Check out Erin’s Tumblr for more Vengeance Road goodies, and stay tuned this week for the rest of the character reveals- one a day (Unless some magic like this happens again and Erin decides we deserve- amazingly- more than one at a time)!

In case you missed it: Meet Kate Thomspon

TEASER TUESDAY

THIS WAS A GREAT IDEA

I’m talking about Dani from danireviewsthings.com!  She’s a super awesome person with really cool ideas for weekly memes to feature on your blog, and this one was just fabulous. Instead of trying to write some huge post with ten different things and explanations, this is a short blurb from A Daily Rhythm.

NOWHERE BUT HERE~ KATIE MCGARRY

‘A wildness strikes her eyes as tears line the edges.

“I don’t want to be a part of your family because your family kills!”‘

Woah. Intense, right? That’s the one I’m reading right now, and I just started it earlier today. Seriously, only on page 26 (at the time of typing this) Nothing like a quick random page skim to get you excited for more!

What’s YOUR Teaser Tuesday?! Post a link to your blog or post in the comments!

Questions? Comments? Books you’d like me to review? Post a comment below and I’ll be sure to check it out!

Meet the Cast of Vengeance Road  { 1 of 5 }

Introducing Kate Thompson

Disguised as a boy, Kate takes to the plains looking to avenge her father’s murder. When she discovers he was killed for a journal revealing the location of a gold mine, Kate presses on despite the warning that “gold makes monsters of men.”

Fun Fact: The first line of Vengeance Road came to me in the shower (it’s remained unchanged since then!) and it had a stilted, rough quality to it. It didn’t take me long to realize that this was Kate’s voice and that the story demanded to be told in her dialect. (For those wary of novels written in dialect, I’ve heard from a bunch of early readers who said it took only a few pages to get used to Kate’s narration. Fingers crossed you’ll be the same!)

If anyone knows the artist/source, please let me know) / Chad Copress / Antique Arms Inc / Rush Zimmerman

ISN’T SHE GORGEOUS?

That wold spitfire- she’s not scared of anything, and she doesn’t let anyone break her down. Even in the face of tragedy, she stays strong and carries on. I think she’s one of the strongest heroines I’ve ever met, and I’m proud to be part of this initiative to make her known! As a little girl, I dreamed of being just like Kate- a Wild West cowgirl who could shoot straighter than any boy and who could ride like the wind. Basically, I wanted to be an outlaw, but that’s neither here nor there. So when I first read about this heroine who takes matters into her own hands and doesn’t let some man tell her what to do or how to live, I was in love, and that little girl in me started screaming ‘THIS IS THE BOOK YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!’ The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater was also great for that, but this book speaks to everyone who ever wanted to ride bareback through the wild Arizona desert, dodging rattlesnakes and bullets. Check it out, everyone, and stay tuned for tomorrow’s reveal! (Hopefully Jesse! <333)
